BRENDON BIELAT

When and why did you decide to join the military and where were you located when you made this decision?

I decided to join the military when I applied to the US Naval Academy in my senior year of high school (Fall 1997). At the time, I lived with my family in a town outside of Rochester, NY. I wanted to join for the opportunity to travel the world, to develop as a leader, and out of a sense of obligation to serve my country. The idea of free college was also very appealing!

Where did you serve during your time in uniform?

Groton, CT (aboard the submarine USS ALBUQUERQUE, SSN 706) and in Washington, DC.

What were some of your key memories during your time of service?

I remember adventures during port calls with my friends, studying hard in order to qualify to run the ship's nuclear propulsion system, and fun practical jokes while out at sea. Most of all, I remember how closely we all worked together, got to know each, and relied on each other every day.

What is an important value that you took away from your military experience?

I learned the importance of living up to the orders or expectations you were given because every one else was counting on you to follow through to your best ability.

What advice would you give someone interested in joining the military?

I'd say do your research and talk to as many veterans as you can! I think there are many assumptions about the military that may or may not be true, so find out for yourself. There are also so many opportunities and different fields to explore that aren't commonly known.
