When and why did you decide to join the military and where were you located when you made this decision?

I was drafted in 1969 while at U. of Iowa in Graduate school with a major in preventative Medicine. I entered Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOC Pensacola) in 1970

Where did you serve during your time in uniform?

Flight training had me in Pensacola FL area, then Texas for basic, advanced & carrier landing training in propeller and jet aircraft.  Then Arkansas for advanced C130 training  & CA and Philippines for various survival schools etc. Thailand was my first overseas station, flying in/out of Vietnam at night in a C130 E aircraft. Then Quonset Point RI in Antarctic Development Squadron 6 (VXE6) flew both North and South Pole missions (bonus learning to fly helicopters). Next was San Diego on AdmralStockdales Staff. During these years I flew out of many places (all 7 continents) on various missions as well as an exchange pilot in New Zealand.

What were some of your key memories during your time of service? 

Some key memories I had were seeing the northern/southern lights while flying and making many lasting friendships.

What is an important value that you took away from your military experience? 

Family, duty honor country are not just catch phrases. I’ve flown and worked for and with TRUE heroes.

 What advice would you give someone interested in joining the military? 

Military is very diverse with so many skills and academic focuses. Research one’s options and network prior to selecting a direction. Choose and work todo things that expand your knowledge and future opportunities. Take advantage of all it has to offer.  It is more than just a job. Benefits are great with education GI Bill & Tricare for Life when one retire.
